| Yesterday saw BusinessMap deliver its Black Economic Empowerment Review for 2001. The results showed that some R4bn worth of inflows were recorded in the 2001 calendar year. This is a 60% or R1.5bn improvement from the R2.5bn figure recorded in 2000. However, it is nowhere near the whopping R21bn worth of inflows that were achieved in 1998. Nevertheless, last year's improvements were mainly as a result of continued deals within the mining industry. Additionally, BEE companies on the JSE now constituite 2% of total market captilisation. According to BusinessMap, the current thrust of the BEE Commission appears to be that of ownership rather than sheer control. In fact, many traditionally white corporates are also now seeking strategic alliances with these so-called BEE firms so as to gain additional expertise and greater market access. | ||
